The City of Chicago is working hard to improve its aging infrastructure, but there are 4,400 miles of sewer main in Chicago and the key is to keep as much water out of the sewer as possible during the heaviest rains. Sewer mains fill up, and additional water pushes into basements through private drains. The Basement Flooding Partnership is a new partnership between the City of Chicago and neighbors who wish to reduce the risk of basement flooding during heavy rains. Recently, Chicago had a record rain of 8 inches. The program’s main goal is to prevent flooding from occurring. However, there are some practical steps you can take to stay safe if flooding does occur. One of the most serious problems that can arise from skin contact with floodwater is tetanus. The tetanus bacteria typically enters the body through places where the skin is broken, so it is very important to protect these areas. Also, septic systems with a pump need electricity. Without it, sewage can back up into your home. Use very little water from your tap until power is restored. Do not continue to use water if sewage backs up into the house, or if water or sewage is observed surfacing near the septic system.
