The South Beloit Wastewater Treatment Plant is considering just what needs to be done to make adequate and purposeful revisions to an aging sewer infrastructure. While there have been expansions on an average of every 11 years, it has been approximately 30 years since a major overhaul. One issue the sanitary sewer system in South Beloit has faced for years, is the problem of groundwater getting into the sanitary sewer system. This infiltration of water means the sewer plant is treating more than three times the amount of wastewater it should be treating. A current estimate is placed at an average of 2.74 million gallons per day with a maximum flow of 4.97 million gallons per day going through the plant. The infiltration of groundwater may be due to improper storm drain connections or water entering into the system through leaks in pipes. The base capacity of the plant is 3 million gallons a day. A few options are being considered for improvements. To either seek a remote treatment plant or expand the current one to a capacity of 5 million gallons a day. That option would be priced at over $17,000,000.
